The Keys to Catching a Limit of Eater Blue Catfish on Lake Tawakoni

Find the primary baitfish blue cat eat and you are going catch fish.  The best catfish bait for Lake Tawakoni is fresh shad.  We can not say this enough DO NOT USE FROZEN SHAD!  Put in the work, get the cast net out, and find threadfin and gizzard shad on Lake Tawakoni! Fish structure and don’t be afraid to go shallow.

Most of our Eater Blue Catfish Trips are in water less than 15 feet deep, and near trees.  Don’t just fish tree stick-ups, use your technology to find humps, ledges, or drop-offs nearby.  You spend a lot of money on your depth finders, learn how to use them.  Your structure scan will show schools of Eater Blue Catfish on large flats.  We will drift areas until we find active feeding blue catfish, then we will anchor.

Top 3 Lake Tawakoni Catfish Tips for Eater Blues

Number One

Shad are nomadic, and they are the first species in a lake to respond to changing weather conditions. Shad move before blue cats do. Shad are the blue cats’ main course for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, they dictate the fishes’ location. Keep it simple, find the shad, and you will find Blue Catfish on Lake Tawakoni!  White bass love to eat shad, and when schools of white bass are seen feeding on shad, blue catfish likely are nearby.

Number Two

When the water temperature reaches 60°F in late March on Lake Tawakoni, concentrations of blues and shad in 20 to 30 feet of water on flats, with many more milling about in 3 to 10 feet of water on the same flats. The shallow blue cats and deeper fish are very close to each other so we split the difference and anchor between the two schools.  Blue Catfish prefer to suspend rather than move about on the bottom. When they’re in deep-water spots we find them suspended 10 feet below the surface and 20 feet above bottom!

Number Three

Don’t forget to downsize your equipment a bit before you go after Eater Blue Catfish.  The 8/0 circle hooks are overpowering for a 2 lb blue catfish.  We like a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook.  If you do find that 50-pound plus trophy blue catfish running with the eaters, you have enough hook to get that fish to the net.

We are fishing very shallow, so the 8oz lead sinker should be replaced with a 3/4 or 1/2oz depending on the wind. We also downsize our line to 20-pound and use a 30-pound leader.  Depending on the are we are fish we like to use a Santee Rig or a Slip Bobber Rig.  Thanks for reading our Eater Blue Catfish Report!  This action will continue through May, then it will be Channel Catfish time!  If you want to book a Catfish Trip on Lake Tawakoni please contact us today!
